Lymphedema Therapy
The body’s lymphatic system is an important part of immune function which protects us from infection and disease. A vast network of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes keep our body fluids in balance by returning protein and water back to the cardiovascular system and filtering waste, bacteria, and toxins throughout the body where it is disposed of by way of the urinary system. When this lymphatic network is damaged or compromised, it can lead to chronic accumulation of protein-rich fluid within the body’s tissue spaces, this condition is referred to as Lymphedema. This swelling can commonly occur in the arms and legs, but can also present itself in the chest wall, abdomen, head, neck and genitals.

Treatment of Lymphedema
There currently is no cure for Lymphedema, but it can be treated and managed with Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) which is subdivided into two phases. We can help you by designing a specific program to fit your individual needs.
Phase I is the decongestion phase and consists of manual lymphatic drainage, multilayered non-elastic compression bandaging, exercise, and skin care. This phase typically consists of 5 days per week for 3 to 5 weeks.
Phase II is the maintenance or self-care phase and consists of self manual lymphatic drainage, a life long commitment to daily and/or nightly compression garments, exercise, and skin care.
